Taxonomy
Cliftonia (Cliftonia) lamellosa was named by Williams (1951) [= Atrypa imbricata Reed 1905, p. 451, pl. xxiii, fig. 16.]. Its type specimen is SM. A30211a+b, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cliftonia psittacina by Cocks and Price (1975); it was recombined as Cliftonia lamellosa by Cocks (2014).

A. Williams 1951 | Exterior.--Subquadrate, unequally biconvex, the dorsal valve more so than the ventral, accentuated by the very strong median dorsal fold and the complementary ventral sulcus ; ornamented by 28 costae and strongly developed concentric lamellae. Delthyrium closed except apically by a deltidium bearing a median, acutely triangular fold.
Ventral interior.--Teeth widely set, simple, supported by short but strong dental plates. Muscle scars obscure. Plug of the apical foramen preserved as a short curved rod situated at the apical end of the umbo. Dorsal interior.--Notothyrial platform absent, cardinal process massive, forked ; brachial processes well developed, divergent ; teeth sockets small. Adductor muscle scar rather obscure except for the curved antero-lateral ridges of the posterior adductors. |
