Istisporites caeruleus was named by Huckriede (1982). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Hu 1843/17, a microspore, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Brilon-Nehden, which is in a Barremian/Aptian sinkhole claystone in Germany.
