Cystaster was named by Hall (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 318]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hemicystitidae by Regnéll (1966); and to Isorophida by Sepkoski (2002).
