Cyathotheca was named by Jaekel (1927). Its type is Cyathotheca suecica.

It was assigned to Cyathothecidae by Regnéll (1945); to Cyathocystidae by Regnéll (1966) and Bockelie and Paul (1983); and to Edrioasterida by Sepkoski (2002).
