Calymene verrucosa was named by Dalman (1827). It is the type species of Atractopyge.
It was recombined as Atractopyge verrucosa by Nikolaisen (1961), Owen (1981), Owen and Harper (1982) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1991).
