Brachyschisma was named by Reimann (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 523]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Brachyschismatidae. It was considered monophyletic by Reimann (1945).

It was assigned to Brachyschismatidae by Reimann (1945) and Beaver et al. (1967); and to Fissiculata by Sepkoski (2002).
