Clidastes propython was named by Cope (1869). Its type specimen is Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia no. 10193, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Uniontown, which is in a Santonian/Maastrichtian marine horizon in Alabama.
