Strophomena unicostata was named by Meek and Worthen (1868).

It was recombined as Rafinesquina unicostata by Hall and Clarke (1892); it was recombined as Leptaena unicostata by Whiteaves (1897); it was recombined as Megamyonia unicostata by Wang (1949) and Pope (1976).
