Leptaena scissa was named by Davidson (1871). It is the type species of Leangella, Leangella (Leangella).
It was recombined as Plectambonites scissa by Reed (1917); it was recombined as Leangella scissa by Cocks (1970), Temple (1987), Modzalevskaya and Popov (1995); it was recombined as Leangella (Leangella) scissa by Williams et al. (2000), Cocks (2005), Rubel (2011).
