Aetosauria was named by Lydekker (1889). It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was corrected as Aetosauri by Jaekel (1910) and Jaekel (1911); it was synonymized subjectively with Pseudosuchia by Charig (1967); it was reranked as the unranked clade Aetosauria by Parker (2007), Schoch (2007) and Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Loricata by Hay (1902); to Loricati by Jaekel (1910) and Jaekel (1911); to Parasuchia by Osborn (1904), Lull (1915) and Lull (1917); to Pseudosuchia by Gauthier and Padian (1985); to Thecodontia by Carroll (1988); to Rauisuchiformes by Parrish (1993); to Crocodylotarsi by Heckert and Lucas (1998), Lucas et al.
