Turbo capitaneus was named by Munster (1844).

It was recombined as Amberleya (Eucyclus) capitanea by Szabo (1982); it was recombined as Eucyclus capitaneus by Schulbert and Nützel (2013); it was recombined as Ambercyclus capitaneus by Ferrari et al. (2014).
