Acanthalepis was named by McCoy (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 326,532]. Its type is Acantholepis jamesii.

It was assigned to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheirocrinidae by Paul (1972) and Paul and Rozhnov (2016).
