Apiocystites was named by Forbes (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 328]. It is not extant. Its type is Apiocystites angelini. It is the type genus of Apiocystitinae.
It was assigned to Apiocystitinae by Beaver et al. (1967); to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Callocystitidae by Paul and Rozhnov (2016).
