Ammonites keppleri was named by Oppel (1862). It is the type species of Kepplerites, Kepplerites (Kepplerites).

It was recombined as Macrocephalites keppleri by Zittel (1884); it was recombined as Kepplerites (Kepplerites) keppleri by Agaev and Guseinov (1972).
