Cheirocystis was named by Paul (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 326]. Its type is Echinoencrinites anatiformis.

It was assigned to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheirocrinidae by Paul (1972), Sumrall and Schumacher (2002) and Paul and Rozhnov (2016).
