Cuniculocystis was named by Sprinkle and Wahlman (1994) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1071]. Its type is Cuniculocystis floweri.

It was assigned to Cuniculcystidae by Sprinkle and Wahlman (1994); and to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002).

Wahlman 1994Glyptocystitid rhombiferans with cylindrical angular theca, plating formula 4 BB, 5 ILL, 5 LL, 5 paired RR (10 total), and 7 00; four plates around relatively large periproct on side of theca, two paired RR beneath each ambulacral tip; no pectinirhombs, most thecal plates having covered epispires on sutures, plate surfaces nearly smooth except for few sharp ridges; ambulacra short, confined to domed summit, 3-4 brachioles on each; proximal stem enlarged, relatively small to medium-sized, proximal columnals ridged or ridged and grooved.
