Pentamerus decussatus was named by Whiteaves (1891) [4 syntypes]. Its type specimen is GSC 8997 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Conchidium decussatum by Hall and Clarke (1892); it was recombined as Virgiana decussata by Savage (1918), Jin and Copper (2000) and Jin et al. (2006).
