Prioniodus excavatus was named by Branson and Mehl (1933). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Neoprioniodus excavatus by Walliser (1964) and Rexroad and Nicoll (1972); it was recombined as Ozarkodina excavata by Aldridge (1974), Cooper (1976), Simpson and Talent (1995), Farrell (2003) and Valentine et al. (2006); it was recombined as Hindeodella excavata by Jeppsson (1974); it was recombined as Wurmiella excavata by Murphy et al. (2004), Murphy et al. (2004) and Corradini and Corriga (2010).
