Plethoschisma was named by Sprinkle (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 325]. Its type is Plethoschisma grandis.

It was assigned to Pleurocystitidae by Sprinkle (1974); to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Deltacystinae by Sumrall and Sprinkle (1995) and Nardin and Bohatý (2013).

J. Sprinkle 1974Large pleurocystitid cystoids having a flattened triangular calyx with a strongly asymmetrical profile. Plating irregu- lar; BB, ILL, and LL circlets well developed, but RR and 00 circlets reduced. Size of peri- proct and ventral plating poorly known, but many small periproctals apparently present. Two strongly compressed conjunct rhombs (B2/IL2 and L3/L4) present on dorsal sur- face bearing as many as 130 apparently discrete dichopores. Two long biserial brachioles attached to summit beside central mouth with brachiolar food groove running along inside dorsal surface. Enlarged proximal stem con- tains ridged outer colum
