Strophomena varistriata was named by Conrad (1842).

It was recombined as Strophodonta varistriata by Hall (1859); it was recombined as Stropheodonta (Brachyprion) varistriata by Hall and Clarke (1892); it was recombined as Mesodouvillina varistriata by Johnson (1970).
