Calix was named by Rouault (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is the type genus of Calixinae.
It was assigned to Calixinae by Chauvel (1966); to Diploporita by Sepkoski (2002); and to Arystocystididae by Gutiérrez-Marco and Colmenar (2011).
