Mespilocystites was named by Barrande (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Ashg-u Sepkoski's reference number: 540].

It was assigned to Coronoidea by Brett et al. (1983); to Coronata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stephanocrinidae by Gutiérrez-Marco et al. (1996), Webster and Webster (2012) and McDermott and Paul (2015).
