Pterygotoidea was named by Clarke and Ruedemann (1912).

It was corrected as Pterygotioidea by Dunlop et al. (2013); it was misspelled as Pterygotioidea by Dunlop et al. (2020).

It was assigned to Eurypterina by Tetlie et al. (2007); and to Diploperculata by Lamsdell et al. (2013), Dunlop et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
