Argyrotheca plana was named by Cooper (1979). Its type specimen is USNM 550328a and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Palmer Loc. 932c/USNM Loc. 818c, Carretera Central, W of Matanzas, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in Cuba.
