Trochocystites was named by Barrande (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid Sepkoski's reference number: 805]. Its type is Trochocystites bohemicus.

It was assigned to Cincta by Sepkoski (2002); to Trochocystitidae by Smith and Zamora (2009); and to Sucocystidae by Zamora et al. (2023).
