Taxonomy
Sphaerexochus hemicranium was named by Kutorga (1854). It is the type species of Pseudosphaerexochus (Pseudosphaerexochus).

It was recombined as Cheirurus (Pseudosphaerexochus) hemicranium by Schmidt (1881); it was recombined as Pseudosphaerexochus (Pseudosphaerexochus) hemicranium by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1991); it was recombined as Pseudosphaerexochus hemicranium by Owen and Bruton (1980), Owen (1981) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
