Dendrocystites was named by Barrande (1887). Its type is Dendrocystites sedgwicki.

It was corrected as Dendrocystis by Bather (1913).

It was assigned to Cystoidea by Bather (1913); to Soluta by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dendrocystitidae by Regnéll (1945) and Noailles et al. (2014).
