Taxonomy
Phoca tropicalis was named by Gray (1850) [Historically extinct.]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Monachus tropicalis by Gray (1866), Allen (1880), Sherman (1952), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Riedman (1990), Vidal (1991), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Adam (2004), Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Cullen et al. (2014); it was recombined as Monachus (Monachus) tropicalis by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Friant (1947) and Hendey (1972); it was recombined as Neomonachus tropicalis by Scheel et al. (2014) and Berta et al. (2018).
