Archaeocothurnus was named by Sumrall et al. (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid Cm Trep]. Its type is Cothurnocystis bifida.

It was assigned to Cothurnocystidae by Sumrall et al. (1997) and Lefebvre and Vizcaino (1999).
