Taxonomy
Protocystites was named by Hicks (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-m Sepkoski's reference number: 744]. It is not extant. Its type is Protocystites menevensis.
It was assigned to Eocrinoidea by Beaver et al. (1967); and to Cornuta by Jefferies et al. (1987), Lefebvre and Vizcaino (1999) and Sepkoski (2002).
