Originally named Leptaena sericea by Sowerby (1839).

Taxonomy
Leptaena sericea was named by Sowerby (1839). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Sowerbyella (Sowerbyella).

It was recombined as Plectambonites serica by Reed (1917); it was recombined as Sowerbyella sericea by Jones (1928), Rõõmusoks (1959), Owen and Harper (1982) and Dewing (1999); it was recombined as Sowerbyella (Sowerbyella) sericea by Mitchell (1977), Cocks (2005), Cocks (2010) and Liljeroth et al. (2017).
