Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
F. R. C. Reed 1917In this shell the long sloping flattened shoulders with false areas and the general shape resemble Rhynch. ardmillanensis (see p. 941), but the folds are coarser, fewer, and only marginal; the beak of the pedicle-valve also seems lower. In DAVIDSON'S poor type-specimen from the Balclatchie conglomerate there are five plications on the brachial valve, and they do not curve outwards on each side as DAVIDSON incorrectly shows. In other specimens from the same locality (mounted and named by DAVIDSON with the type) there are 5 or 6 folds on the brachial valve, the 2 middle ones being usually rather larger and closer, and on the pediclevalve there are 3-4 on each side of the shallow narrow sinus.
A. Williams 1962Biconvex Idiospira-like shells, acutely triangular outline accentuated by a truncated anterior margin, which is also slightly depressed ventrally and dorsally, and steep, nearly vertical sides with the pedicle valves slightly longer than wide; initially smooth, but beyond the 4-ram. growth-stage ornamented by 4, or rarely 6, sharp costae in the brachial valve, and 5 or 7 in the pedicle valve; dental lamellae long, slightly divergent, muscle-field with a lanceolate median adductor scar over one-third as long as the pedicle valve; hinge-plate divided, crural bases flaring, muscle-scar quadripartite, vascula media closely set and parallel, corresponding to the crests of the submedian costae.
