Costigerites was named by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: J T Eo]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Costigerites piveteaui.

It was assigned to Calclamnidae by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962) and Frizzell and Exline (1966); to Calcancoridae by Soodan (1991); and to Dendrochirotida by Sepkoski (2002).
