Taxonomy
Thecosmilia wasabidaniensis was named by Oguchi and Yamagiwa (1978). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wasabi Valley, Locality 1, which is in a Carnian reef, buildup or bioherm reef rocks in Japan.

It was recombined as Retiophyllia wasabidaniensis by Stanley and Onoue (2015).
