Tetravirga was named by Frizzell and Exline (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Tr Nori-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,768,982]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Tetravirga imperforata.

It was assigned to Aspidochirotida by Pawson (1966); to Stichopitidae by Frizzell and Exline (1955), Deflandre-Rigaud (1962), Frizzell and Exline (1966), Mostler (1968), Kozur and Mostler (1971), Mostler (1971), Mostler and Rahimi-Yazd (1976), Wernlund (1977) and Mostler (1980); to Holothuroidea by Broglio Loriga et al. (1999); and to Elasipodida by Sepkoski (2002).
