Calcancora was named by Frizzell and Exline (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Rhae R Sepkoski's reference number: 687]. It is extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Calcancora mississippiensis.

It was assigned to Calcancoridae by Frizzell and Exline (1955), Deflandre-Rigaud (1962), Frizzell and Exline (1966), Zawidzka (1971) and Soodan (1991); to Apodida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Synaptidae by Reich and Wiese (2010).
