Hemisphaeranthos was named by Terquem and Berthelin (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie K Sn Sepkoski's reference number: 768]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Hemisphaeranthos costifera.

It was assigned to Theeliidae by Said and Barakat (1958), Frizzell and Exline (1966) and Garbowska and Wierzbowski (1967); to Theelidae by Górka and Luszczewska (1969); to Apodida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myriotrochidae by Reich (2002) and Reich and Wiese (2010).
