Protheelia was named by Frizzell and Exline (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 768]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Chirodota geinitziana.

It was assigned to Chiridotitidae by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962); to Theeliidae by Frizzell and Exline (1955), Frizzell and Exline (1966) and Soodan (1991); and to Apodida by Sepkoski (2002).
