Staurocumites was named by Deflandre-Rigaud (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-u J Oxfo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2,687,988]. It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Priscopedatus by Kozur and Mock (1972).

It was assigned to Dendrochirotida by Deflandre-Rigaud (1952); to Holothuroidea by Gilliland (1992); to Priscopedatidae by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962), Frizzell and Exline (1966), Speckmann (1968), Zawidzka (1971), Kozur and Mostler (1971), Kozur and Mostler (1989) and Krainer and Mostler (1997); and to Molpadiida by Sepkoski (2002).
