Palaeocucumaria was named by Lehmann (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 947]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeocucumaria hunsrueckiana. It is the type genus of Palaeocucumariidae. It was considered monophyletic by Kerr and Kim (2001).
It was assigned to Holothuroidea by Lehmann (1958) and Kerr and Kim (2001); to Palaeocucumariidae by Frizzell and Exline (1966) and Boczarowski (2001); and to Arthrochirotida by Sepkoski (2002).
