Dactylochirotida was named by Pawson and Fell (1965). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Kerr and Kim (2001).
It was assigned to Dendrochirotacea by Frizzell and Exline (1966), Pawson (1966) and Gilliland (1992); and to Holothuroidea by Gilliland (1993), Kerr and Kim (2001), Sepkoski (2002) and Reich (2003).
