Alexandrites was named by Kristan-Tollmann (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Alexandrites alexandri. It is the type genus of Alexandritidae.

It was assigned to Alexandritidae by Kristan-Tollmann (1964) and Frizzell and Exline (1966); and to Holothuroidea by Sepkoski (2002).
