Taxonomy
Archegonaster was named by Jaekel (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 1075]. It is not extant. Its type is Archegonaster pentagonus. It is the type genus of Archegonasteridae. It was considered monophyletic by Dean Shackleton (2005).

It was assigned to Goniactinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Archegonasteridae by Spencer (1951), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Dean Shackleton (2005); and to Somasteroidea by Blake (2013).
