Taxonomy
Sturtzura was named by Gregory (1897). Its type is Protaster brisingoides.

It was synonymized subjectively with Furcaster by Spencer (1925); it was corrected as Stuertzura by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Palaeophiuridae by Schuchert (1915); to Archophiactinidae by Spencer (1927) and Owen (1965); to Pradesuridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Goniactinida by Sepkoski (2002).
