Terebratula linguata was named by von Buch (1834).

It was recombined as Waldheimia linguata by Haas (1884); it was recombined as Atrypoidea linguata by Jin and Chatterton (1997); it was recombined as Linguithyris linguata by Dulai (1992), Vörös (2009).
