Palasteriscus was named by Stürtz (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Palasteriscus devonicus. It is the type genus of Palasteriscidae.

It was assigned to Platanasteridae by Spencer (1919) and Lehmann (1957); to Platyasterida by Sepkoski (2002); to Palasteriscidae by Schuchert (1915), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake (1994) and Blake and Rozhnov (2007); and to Stenuroidea by Blake (2013).
