Australaster was named by Schuchert (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: C u , P l]. Its type is Palaeaster (Monaster) giganteus.

It was assigned to Palaeasteridae by Schuchert (1914), Schuchert (1915) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002).
