Clarkeaster was named by Ruedemann (1916) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeaster clarki. It is the type genus of Clarkeasterinae.

It was assigned to Clarkeasterinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Clarkeasteridae by Blake (2018).
