Girvanaster was named by Spencer (1916) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-m]. Its type is Girvanaster sculptus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Protopalaeaster by Owen (1965).

It was assigned to Hudsonasterinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hudsonasteridae by Dean Shackleton (2005) and Blake (2018).
