Taxonomy
Neopalaeaster was named by Schuchert (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Palaeaster crawfordsvillensis. It is the type genus of Neopalaeasteridae.

It was assigned to Phanerozonia by Schuchert (1914); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); to Neopalaeasteridae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake and Elliott (2003); and to Palaeasteridae by Blake (2018).

D. B. Blake and D. R. Elliott 2003Primary circlet weakly enlarged; interradials, radials approximately equisized, weakly transversely elongate; "extraneous" or "x" ossicles not developed. Carinals in single series, ossicles abutted longitudinally; lateral series present. Marginals in single series, ossicles tabular, transversely oriented; marginals, adambulacrals together forming rounded arm margin. Ventral surface unknown.
